چکیده

310 J Neurosurg: Pediatrics / Volume 6 / October 2010 The debate over ETV versus CSF shunting for the treatment of childhood hydrocephalus remains largely unresolved.1,2,4,6,7,9,11,16,18,20 Recently, we used confounder-adjustment techniques (propensity score modeling) to compare the failure rate of ETV versus shunt placement.13 We found that, once adjusted for confounders, ETV is associated with a higher initial failure rate, but, over time, the failure rate becomes lower than that associated with shunt placement. In a separate publication, we used logistic regression techniques to develop and internally validate a prediction score that would, with good accuracy, predict the 6 month success rate of ETV, taking into account the patient’s age and the etiology of their hydrocephalus.14 The end product of this was the development of the ETV Success Score (ETVSS) (Table 1)—a simple means to predict 31 315

Predicting who will benefit from endoscopic third ventriculostomy compared with shunt insertion in childhood hydrocephalus using the ETV Success Score.

OBJECT The authors recently developed and internally validated the ETV Success Score (ETVSS)--a simplified means of predicting the 6-month success rate of endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) for a child with hydrocephalus, based on age, etiology of hydrocephalus, and presence of a previous shunt. A high ETVSS predicts a high chance of early ETV success. In this paper, they assess the clinica...

Comparing the Efficiency of Two Treatment Methods of Hydrocephalus: Shunt Implantation and Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy

Introduction: Hydrocephalus is one of the most common diseases in children, and its treatment requires brain operation. However, the pathophysiology of the disease is very complicated and still unknown.  Methods: Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy (ETV) and Ventriculoperitoneal Shunt (VPS) implantation are among the common treatments of hydrocephalus. In this study, Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) hyd...

Efficacy of endoscopic third ventriculostomy in the management of hydrocephalus in children under 2 years of age: experience from a tertiary institution in Nigeria.

BACKGROUND The management of hydrocephalus in developing countries is challenging. Hydrocephalus is a common childhood disorder in developing countries in particular and its management is quite challenging. Ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt is associated with high failure rates and complications. Endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) with potentially lower complication rate could improve care an...

Comparison of failure between post- shunted ETV and primary ETV in hydrocephalus: a review article

Hydrocephalus is an abnormal increase in the volume of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and sometimes increased intracerebral pressure also leads to hydrocephalus. Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy (ETV) treatment is a new method for hydrocephaly treatment. In this method, in addition to the fact that the patient does not need an implant, the risk of infection is low and in the long term the result is...

Non-Tumor Obstructive Hydrocephalus Treated with Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy in Cameroon

Objective: In Sub-Saharan Africa, shunt dependence is a real threat for patients. For this reason, any method allowing shunt independence such as endoscopic third ventriculostomy should be promoted. The goal of this study was to show the advantages of neuroendoscopy in treating nontumor obstructive hydrocephalus in Cameroon. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the cases of non-tumor obstructiv...
